IR Serial Data Link(IrDA) can transmit and receive serial data through wireless infrared. This is a simple and low cost way to achieve wireless serial data transmission. There is one limitation that the baud rate at which it can transmit is at 2400 bps only and only half duplex communication can be established.

Half Duplex means the unit can either transmit or receive data at same time. Both transmit and receive cannot happen together in same time.

Its great where you want to remote transmit strings like sensor readings or perform remote control applications. The protocol used is IrDA that is widely used in point to point infrared serial communications.
